Final year elective abroad

Practical clinical training abroad – procedure

  1. Permission to do a 6 week 180 hour Practical Clinical Training abroad (called the final year elective abroad) – speciality selected by the student during the final year of their studies applies to students of the 5th year of 6MD and MD Advanced program and  replaces previous clinical rotations. The term “abroad” refers to all the countries except for Poland.
  2. The time of the final year elective abroad is fixed and defined by the university schedule for the final year of studies and cannot be changed.
  3.  The Vice-Dean’s approval for doing the final year elective abroad is given after the applicant credits the subject of the specialty selected for the elective as well as the below listed subjects of the 5th year of studies:
    • Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care
    • Cardiology
    • Dermatology
    • Emergency Medicine
    • Family Medicine
    • Gastroenterology 
    • Geriatrics (applies to Md Advanced)
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Internal Medicine
    • Medical Rehabilitation
    • Neurology
    • Neurosurgery
    • Obstetrics and Gynecology 
    • Oncological Surgery 
    • Oncology and Paliative Care 
    • Ophthalmology
    • Orthopedics surgery
    • Otolaryngology
    • Pediatrics
    • Psychiatry
    • Surgery
    • Urology (applies to 5-6MD)
  1. The failure to fulfil the above mentioned conditions will result in the Vice-Dean’s refusal to approve the student’s application for the final year elective abroad.
  2. Any attempts to complete the elective abroad without the fulfilment of the above mentioned conditions will not be accepted and the tuition fees will not be refunded.
  3. Any attempts to complete the 6-week elective in Poland by means of the student’s prior personal arrangements will not be accepted and the tuition fees will not be refunded.
  4. The student can select one subject from the following:
    • Otolaryngology
    • Ophthalmology
    • Neurosurgery
    • Urology
    • Orthopedics
    • Neurology
    • Medical Rehabilitation
    • Cardiology
    • Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care
    • Dermatology
    • Gastroenterology

Any other speciality selected by the student needs to be agreed with the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Medicine for Studies in English.

  1. The final year elective abroad must be completed at a university clinical hospital within the time period indicated by the Medical University of Lodz.
  2. English should be the language of instruction and communication at all levels.
  3. The student is fully responsible for securing their place at the university clinical hospital, covering all the costs regarding the elective abroad and Malpractice Insurance as well as obeying all the rules and procedures set by this hospital. Arranging for the elective abroad is the issue between the student and the institution hosting the student abroad. MUL is not obliged to sign any contracts or agreements with this institution.
  4. According to the Directive No. 44/2020 of 18th May 2020 of the Rector of the Medical University of Lodz (with further amendments) the student’s tuition fee will be reduced by the amount equivalent to the current cost of that part of the study program at the Medical University of Lodz. 
  5. Permission to do the Practical Clinical Training abroad applies to students with good academic standing:
    • o Students starting their fifth year 6 MD program in the academic year 2023/2024 with the GPA of  4.0 from the first 8 semesters for 6 MD.

The GPA is considered as a cumulative of GPA of the above stated semesters.

  1. The CBS exam is not required prior to the application; however, some hospitals might set CBS as their criterion of acceptance. Please find out about the hospital’s requirements.
  2. Permission to do the final year elective abroad is given by the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Medicine for Studies in English. Permission can be granted only after submitting the completed Application Form (the original document with original stamps and signatures – no scanned and printed versions will be accepted) by 30th June of the academic year preceding the academic year of the final year elective abroad. 
  3. Certificate of Completion/Clinical Evaluation Form must be completed and signed by a respective supervising doctor and delivered personally to the school by the student not later than two weeks after the training completion.
  4. The final year elective abroad should be credited with the exam of practical clinical training abilities after the student’s return to the Medical University of Lodz. The student should download the Referral for exam of practical clinical training from our website; this must be firstly presented to the coordinator and then to the examiner in order to sit the exam.
  5. After passing the exam the student is obliged to return the Referral with a grade to the Dean’s Office within 3 working days. This is the condition of being granted the ECTS points for the particular course.
  6. The students who received the dean’s permission to do the final year elective abroad in the summer months (July, August, September) preceding the 6th year of studies are obliged to take the exam after their coming back to Poland. Their grade will be submitted into the system with the date of completion of the elective for the specific clinical group scheduled in the timetable of the final year (not sooner than the date of the last scheduled classes of the elective). 
  7. The student who has completed the elective abroad, passed the exam and credited the subject (the grade has been submitted into the VU) should submit the Application for the fee exemption (document ready to download from the website) to his/her coordinator in order to be granted the reduction of the tuition fee for  the part of the study program at MUL conducted abroad.
