LEK/ LDEK EXAM

In accordance with the requirements of Directive 2013/55/EU the license to practice in Poland can be issued after passing the license exam LEK/LDEK and  after completing a post-graduate internship (in Polish: staż podyplomowy). The LEK/ LDEK exams are available in Polish and English language versions.

Registration for LEK/LDEK exam.

LEK/LDEK exam is organised twice a year – in September (registration till 15 July) and in February (registration till 30 November).

You can take part in the exam if you are:

1. A graduate of the 6-year MD program/5-year DMD program, or

2. A 6th year student of the 6-year MD program (condition: you have fully credited 10 semesters)/ a 5th  year student of the 5-year DMD program (condition: you have fully credited 8 semesters).

First step for registration is creating an account in the SMK2 system:

Then you must apply for a role in the system. 

IMPORTANT: you apply for a role „student” (even if you are a graduate). Your application is then sent to MUL, where your identity is confirmed.
When your role is confirmed, you can apply for the exam.

Post-graduate internship

As far as post-graduate internship is concerned, it is possible to complete:

After completing the internship in English (but no later than after 3 months from the completion date) the graduate applies to the Ministry of Health for the decision of recognition of the English internship as an equivalent of the Polish one, which is necessary in the following steps to get the license to practice as a physician.

Please confirm the above procedure in the Polish Chamber of Physicians and Dentists.

Right to practice in Poland

Medicine

The graduate acquires the right to practice as a physician in Poland after completing a 13-month postgraduate internship and submitting, with a positive result, the State Medical Final Examination (LEK). The rules for exercising the medical profession are regulated by the Act of 5 December 1996 on the professions of a physician and a dentist (consolidated text: Journal of Laws of 2021, it. 790, as amended). The graduate also acquires the right to practice as a physician in other European Union countries according to the principles set out in Directive 2005/36/WE of the European Parliament and of the Council of 7th  September 2005 on the recognition of professional qualifications (EU Journal of Laws L 255 of 30th  September 2005, p.22, as amended). The right to practice in other countries is determined by the legal regulations of individual states.

Dental-Medicine

The graduate acquires the right to practice as a dentist in Poland after completing a 12-month postgraduate internship and submitting, with a positive result, the State Medical-Dental Final Examination (LDEK). The rules for exercising the medical profession are regulated by the Act of 5 December 1996 on the professions of a physician and a dentist (consolidated text: Journal of Laws of 2021, it. 790, as amended). The graduate also acquires the right to practice as a physician in other European Union countries according to the principles set out in Directive 2005/36/WE of the European Parliament and of the Council of 7th  September 2005 on the recognition of professional qualifications (EU Journal of Laws L 255 of 30th  September 2005, p.22, as amended). The graduate who commenced studies conducted in the English language in the Republic of Poland in the academic years 2012/2013, 2013/2014, 2014/2015, 2015/2016, 2016/2017, and after obtaining the professional title of a dentist completed a 6-month practical training, under the rules described in Article 8 of the Act of 16 July 2020 amending the Act on the professions of a physician and a dentist and some other acts (Journal of Laws of 2020, item 1291), corresponding to the scope of the clinical part of the postgraduate internship program, conducted in a medical facility providing a medical university with organisational units necessary for pre-graduate and postgraduate training in medical professions, may obtain a decision of the minister responsible for health on recognition of the postgraduate internship as completed. The right to practice in other countries is determined by the legal regulations of individual countries.

Right to practice outside Poland

Since the requirements may differ among countries, it is strongly recommended that each student consults the Medical Chamber in their home country to obtain accurate information regarding this issue.
