MUL innovators success at IPITEX 2023
Innovation Incubator 4.0 financed from European funds as part of the non-competitive project ‘Support for scientific research management and commercialization of R&D results in scientific units and enterprises’, implemented under the Smart Growth Operational Program 2014-2020 The innovative solutions designed by MUL researchers were exhibited in Polish pavilion at International Intellectual Property, Invention, Innovation and Technology Exposition (IPITEx 2023) held on 2-6 February, 2023 in Bangkok, and gained international recognition. They were assessed as the solutions with the potential for commercial application on Asian markets, in Thailand and Laos in particular. ECO CPR: The resuscitation phantom from Medical University of Łódź gained 2. IPITEX’s award. The ecological training phantom was designed by Filip Jaśkiewicz MD PhD, Marcin Cierniak PhD, Rafał Dobruchowski PhD, Przemysław Sękalski PhD. It is noteworthy that exhibitors from beyond Asia have not been as highly recognised for a long while. The ecological phantom is to a large extent made from recyclable materials: paper, cardboard or coconut fibre. The product was internationally acclaimed for, among others, its innovative approach to design and production of this type of device without diminishing its quality, functionality and effectiveness. Shevah Weiss, an eminent political scientist, a humanist, an academic teacher, who dedicated his whole life to interpersonal and intercultural dialogue. A former Israeli ambassador to Poland, a journalist, author of a multitude of scientific, literary and journalistic books. Doctor honoris causa of the Medical University of Lodz in 2011. In all respects, an outstanding character.We have lost a Friend to our University, Lodz and Poland.We honour His memory! Rector, Senate and the community of the Medical University of Lodz. Remembrance note. Prof. SHEVAH WEISS – ‘a child of Holokaustu’, one-time Israeli ambassador to Poland, a soldier, a radio journalist, a diplomat, a political activist, an academic teacher, a graduate at Department of Political Science in Jerusalem and Department of Law in Tel Aviv, a founder of the Department of the Media at the University of Haifa, president of the Yad Vashem Council and the Speaker of the Knesset, author of dozens of books, in short, a true one-man institution whose rich biography was often interwoven with tragic moments. He was born on 7 July 1935 in Boryslaw, Lviv province, in a merchant family. His early childhood was interrupted by the outbreak of WWII. Together with his family he spent the first seven months of the war nightmare in the shelter in the basement where they struggled to survive. Thanks to the help of Polish neighbours they survived and lived in Gliwice, Wałbrzych and Głuszyca, where young Shevah attended a Jewish school. In 1946 the Weiss family decided to get to Palestine via Czechoslovakia, Austria and Italy where they continued their scape by boat. This coincided with the UN announcement of their decision to create the State of Israel. Having arrived in Palestine, Shevah Weiss started his education at Agriculture School in Hadassim, he also practiced athletics and weightlifting competitively at that time. After his school-leaving exams he served in the Israeli Armed Forces (1954-1956). Next, he studied Political Science at Hebrew University in Jerusalem and Law in Tel Aviv. He graduated in 1961. The next stage of his academic career was marked by his obtaining the PhD degree in political science at the University of Jerusalem. Along with his research he fulfilled himself in public activities. He was a member of Haifa City Council (1969-1981) and Central Committee of the Israeli Labour Party (1977-1999). In 1981 he was elected to the Knesset; between 1988 and 1992 he served as a Deputy Speaker of the Knesset, and between 1992 and 1996 as Speaker. He was also Knesset delegate to the Council of Europe (1984-1999). He also performed a very important social function: as president of the Yad Vashem Council in 2001-2004. From 2000 to 2004 he served as an Israeli ambassador in Poland. Since 2004 he gave lectures on Israeli history and politics at the Faculty of Journalism and Political Sciences, University of Warsaw. Since 2008 he was the Head of the Centre for Research on Israel and the Jewish Diaspora at the Faculty of Journalism and Political Sciences, University of Warsaw as well as a visiting professor at the Academy of Special Education in Warsaw. Prof. Shevah Weiss authored a number of books discussing political, sociological and World War II-related issues, as well as books for children and adolescents. The content of his books often points out the common ground between Poland and Israel, Polishness and Jewish traditions. He was guided by the philosophy of mutual understanding, respect and transnational solidarity in a constantly changing world. Shevah Weiss was also a prolific journalist and his articles appeared in Ha’aretz, Yedioth Aharonot, Ma’ariv, Davar, Al-Hamishmar, The Jerusalem Post, Jewish Political Studies Review, Jewish Social Studies, Parliamentary Affairs, Wester Political Quarterly. He also ran his blog in Rzeczpospolita.He received numerous awards and distinctions, i.a.: Bene Merito badge of honour received from Minister Radosław Sikorski (2009); in 2004 President Aleksander Kwaśniewski awarded him the Grand Cross (1st class) of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland; in 1995 The Council for a Beautiful Israel awarded him Tolerance Prize, he received Amitai Award for Integrity in Public Service in 1996, St. Brother Albert Prize in 1998. He was granted the Honorary Citizenship of the City of Kalisz, the City of Płońsk and the City of Wałbrzych. In 2006 he received an honorary doctorate of the University of Wroclaw and in 2011- an honorary doctorate of the University of Warsaw. In 2008 he became a member of the International Chapter of the Order of the Smile. Shevah Weissonce said:(.)’Though the contemporary world is full of violence, I am searching for positive features in people, the features that lead towards goodness and beauty.’ THAT IS THE SHEVAH WE WILL KEEP IN OUR MEMORY.

The winners of the prestigious Forbes Diamonds 2023 award have been announced. Central University Hospital (CUH) Medical University of Lodz is one of the recipients of the award ranked 7 on the national list of companies in medical and healthcare industry. Such a recognition in such hard times is a double reason to relish the award. It appears that, admittedly not for the first time, our hospital was not only appreciated for the quality of the health care services but also for effective and competent management. This confirms our belief that we have chosen the right direction, that consolidation of potentials is worthwhile, that it pays off to develop digital solutions and reach out for new initiatives, saysMonika Domarecka PhD, Director of CUH. Central University Hospital is one of three university hospitals of the Medical University of Lodz. MUL structure also includes Pediatric Center Maria Konopnicka (hospital at Sporna St.), Institute of Dentistry, Psychiatry and recently incorporated Gynaecology and Obstetrics Centre Rydygier (hospital at Sterlinga St.). The position of CUH has already been confirmed by numerous awards and certificates the hospital has collected so far: Accreditation Certificate granted by Centre for Quality Monitoring in Health Care, ISO certificates, “Hospital Without Pain” Certificate. Last year, the hospital initiated the construction of Lodz Toxicology Centre (total investments over PLN 60 million), and also received over PLN 100 million from Medical Funds (as one of 14 facilities nationwide) for the improvements in the health care services for the youngest patients. The obtained resources will fund the reconstruction and equipment upgrade for Pediatric Center Maria Konopnicka at Sporna St. as well as the establishment of Supra-regional Centre for Pediatric Oncology at Clinical and Didactic Centre in Lodz. Forbes Diamonds is an annual ranking of the most dynamically developing Polish companies. The ranking is based on a Swiss method that assesses the value of know-how and investments, where the companies are being recognized based on their sales levels, net income, the value of fixed assets, or their level of investments. What is also crucial in the assessment is the lack of negative events and the hazard ratio being below 4.

Recently, our University hosted Prof. Benjamin Harris, a long-term employee of the University of Oxford, an oncologist, a researcher and the owner of Smashmedicine LTD. Prof. Harris ran some classes for the students at English Division of the Faculty of Medicine on ‘Entrepreneurship and innovation in health care systems’. The participants had a chance to learn about current methods of creating innovations and setting up entrepreneurial business in health care. Prof. Harris’ visit is the fruit of an ongoing collaboration between prof. Magdalena Wrzesińska, Head of Department of Psychosocial Rehabilitation and the researchers from Oxford in the project funded by w EIT-Health „SmashMedicine: transforming medical education” (2020-2023). The aim of the project is to evaluate and implement the learning platform based on machine learning and gamification. The visit was held thanks to the University activities within MUL Developmental Strategy for 2021-2025 within the programme of hosting and employing visiting professors at the Medical University of Lodz.

On 27 January 2023 Diploma Awarding Ceremony was held for the graduates of the Faculty of Health Sciences and professional titles were also granted to the graduates of the Division of Nursing and Midwifery of the academic year 2021/2022. The ceremony also provided an opportunity to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Faculty. The event was attended by the University Authorities: The list of hosts also included: The ceremony was also an opportunity to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Faculty of Health Sciences. The symbols of recognition granted by the Senate of the Medical University of Lodz were awarded and congratulations were expressed to the distinguished MUL employees. For the record: The Medal of Merit for Medical University of Lodz was awarded to: The Badge for Merit to Medical University of Lodz was awarded to: During the celebration the graduates of the Faculty were rewarded for the best results and outstanding contribution for academic community organisations. The list of top graduates with the highest GPA included: Distinctions and awards were handed over by the representatives of the following sponsors: the Polish Chamber of Physiotherapists, Main Council of Nurses and Midwives, District Council of Nurses and Midwives, Lodz Division of Polish Nurses Association, Salve Medica, Interpolska. A vocal performance given by Julia Miazek, a gifted student at the Division of Nursing, was a unique musical setting of the event. From January 1st, 2023, people who completed, in the territory of the Republic of Poland, their Medical or Medical and Dentist Studies, in a language other than Polish, and have not completed a postgraduate internship, are entitled to enrol into a postgraduate internship (Practical Training after Medical Studies in English). The Practical Training will lasts 6 months and must be begun within 2 years from the date of obtaining a doctor or dentist diploma. On 20 January 2023 a diploma awarding ceremony was held for the graduates of the Faculty of Medicine, Medical and Dentistry Division of the academic years 2020/2021and 2021/2022. The event was attended by the University Authorities: Prof. Janusz Piekarski, Vice-Rector for Organisation and Student Affairs; Prof. Marzenna Zielińska, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine; Vice-Deans of the Faculty of Medicine: Prof. Jerzy Sokołowski, Prof. Monika Łukomska-Szymańska, Prof. Joanna Szczepańska and uczelni Sebastian Kłosek Prof of MUL, PhD. Moreover, the list of guests included: Adam Wieczorek, Vice-President of Lodz; Paweł Czekalski PhD, the President of the Regional Medical Council (RMC); and Patrycja Proc MD PhD, Member of the RMC Presidium. The most outstanding performance and activity in students organisations was appreciated and the following graduates were honoured for their top GPA: Jakub Kopytek (a graduate in 2020/2021) was honoured for his long-term engagement in the activity of the University Council of the Student Government.
